We have read the first four Hornblower novels and commented on a few, including on terminology. We do not believe that George Sulzbach read any of the C. S. Forester Horatio Hornblower novels. He may have read a comic book. Does he care to discuss the books with us?

BTW, Sulzbach was 27 when he joined the Navy.

I wonder if he was as big of a trolling, sycophantic, ignorant, unhygenic douchebag "in [his] youth" as he is today?
Or was that something he just perfected over years of trial and error?

We are sure he was just as bad. He was also unemployable, which is why he joined the Navy (supposedly). He doesn't demonstrate any knowledge of sailing ships, the sea, Horatio Hornblower, the Napoleonic Wars, or life skills.

Georgie Porgie has been doing a good enough job of his own on that in recent years.
One suspects that there will be a call to 9-1-1 one of these days of someone finding a body just off of the freeway.

IIRC, 25 was the cut off date. A 27-year old would need to get special permission.

I'm going solely from memory here (since I've blocked too many of GZ's threads to bother with a search), but I believe he was born in 1959 and served in the Navy from 1978-1982.

I also have a vague recollection that he might have fudged those dates on at least one occasion.

It's certainly possible that he never was in the Navy. However, we see that age waivers starts at 34, so at 27 he could have joined, providing that he met the physical and mental tests.

No, remember when he claimed to have been in the Navy for "most of the 80s?" Well, that wasn't quite true either:

> "My years in the Navy were indeed 1986-1990... and then a number of years in the Navy Resrves..."
Note that he was in the "Resrves," not the "Reserves." However, according to his birth date, he would have been 27 when joining (if he did).

They were indeed all over a time line. You were in the Navy--do you recognize some of the terms that we have pointed out from the Forester books? Sulzbach seems to be ignorant even of the concept of "ocean."

I recognize the terms from other novels (Melville, Conrad, Poe, etc.), and from researching clipper ships (and such) for my poetry. In the Navy, I learned terms like "split-tail," "burger king," "chit," "head," "rifter," "grinder," and such.

Did you read "Beat to Quarters" yet? We are reading the books in the order in which they were written, which is not necessarily chronological in Hornblower's life and career. The A&E series is also very good. We have watched the first 2 seasons on DVD and will watch the others "as time permits."

I haven't read many contemporary novels... probably because I've little interest in contemporary things. Those I do read, are usually set in the past.. I also don't pay any attention to the best sellers lists. If I come across a book that catches my interest (usually in a second-hand bookstore or a library sale), I'll read it. When it comes to seeking out books to read, I'm still working my way through Dickens (I've read a bio on him, 7 out of 15 novels, and several short stories).

We like those too--have you read "Master and Commander?"

When it comes to seeking out books to read, I'm still working my way through Dickens (I've read a bio on him, 7 out of 15 novels, and several short stories).
We know that Dickens serialized two of his novels, and there was great demand for each new installment. You can buy 3 volumes of "Master Humphrey's Clock" (1840/1841) for $400 on eBay or a first edition for $4,898.00. (Spoiler: Little Nell dies.)

The A&E series is also very good. We have watched the first 2 seasons on DVD and will watch the others "as time permits."

> We like those too--have you read "Master and Commander?"

No. Off the top of my head, the sea-faring novels I h've read are: "Moby-Dick," "Omoo," "Typee," "Billy Budd," "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket," "Carry On Mr. Bowditch," "Two Years Before the Mast," "Treasure Island," "Lord Jim," "The Secret Sharer," "The Sea Wolf," and "The Old Man and the Sea."

No worries, I'm well aware of Little Nell's fate -- "The Old Curiosity Shop" is one of my all-time favorite books.
