“On July 2, 1961, Earnest Miller Hemingway rose quietly so as not to disturb his wife. He put on his bathrobe and slippers, walked down to the basement of his Idaho home, and unlocked his gun case. He climbed the steps to his foyer, placed his favorite shotgun to the roof of his mouth, and blew the top of his head off.
Many of those who have never read a Hemingway novel or biography still know the details of this tragedy. His suicide may even be the most famous in American history, competing with those of Marilyn Monroe and Robin Williams for this tragic distinction. He shot himself only six days after his discharge from the Mayo Clinic, where he had been hospitalized twice. The primary goal of his treatment at Mayo for severe depression and psychosis was to prevent this exact scenario. Yet his death was the result not of medical mismanagement, but of medical misunderstanding. Hemingway received state-of-the-art psychiatric treatment in 1960 and 1961, but for the wrong illness.”

I couldn't under why he choose to escape, he unlike me, seemed to have freedom, a life and a family. Even though I finally escaped to freedom without resorting to his drastic method, I still feel his doom following me.

Also you could gain much perspective by firing a shotgun in a mock test run.. Don't use shot, too much of a chance of being grazed in the side of the head...

They’re not mindless, and they’re not hidden, but getting them out

I feel for them. Once at the VA I was waiting next to a vet. His body was functioning just fine but his mind was gone-- a vacant shell in a wheelchair pushed around by his 'widow'...
Now I'm glad you don't take me literally, perhaps your psychiatric knowledge serves you well, keeping you from knee jerk reacting that I allude harm to you.

I disagree, they're hidden from the rest of Society-- I know, they also put me on shelf, in a safe place, so normal people don't have to worry about me for serving them and their now corrupted American dream of 'only me'.

I don’t really have any psychiatric knowledge, just lots of experience.
Vets are hidden in plain sight, and trotted out for special occasions
and photo opportunities. A local event has people run through the VA
hospital campus as resident veterans line the street to cheer them on.
