Dry Dock

I am in dry dock,
though a river flows
yards from my feet.

No keel is needed,
no engine as dry rot
attacks the oak ribs.

My float has ended,
I think not of the open sea
but open bottle.

I set the flag upside down,
the distress call goes out
I walk over stones to empty cans

I am Christ the landlubber,
my journey ends in mud
awaiting the final flood.

Perhaps I’ll rise and float
to the horizon,
a Viking ablaze by the setting sun.
