Don't get me wrong, everyone farts
but Dad farted when giving me the belt.

Now it could be the force involved
or perhaps the nerves at play with such a practice.

Or perhaps my bare bum brought on
what a bum is known for.

I learned to understand fart talk.

The harder the lash, the higher the squeak,
a falsetto note, if you will.

The lower the sound was more relaxed
and that meant an easier hit.

Think The Five Satins.

I did think of lighting a match, burning down the house
but I figured I'd just let Polly out of prison during the wake.

We hear the need for onomatopoeia in the poem "My Father's Farts:"

Wwwwhhhiiiipp went the belt leather
Bbbbrrrrtttt came the fart nether
Wwwwacckkk said the belt buckle
Ttthppppwwwpppp made us both chuckle.
