Vegas Twinkle

Did Jesus look for peace in the desert sun
that scorches the backs of armadillos, the rattler band
where only scorpions take to the dance floor
avoiding a venomous strike with a mambo trot?

It’s cold when Pygmy Owl eyes peer from a hollowed cactus --
all is quiet as sand sleeps under a mask-less black sky and Vegas
showgirls drop an Advil waiting to go on for the next round
of drunken glares.

Jesus prays at the roulette wheel with a spin to win
a pocket full of silver though gold dreams have replaced twelve loaves,
as parched lawns await his morning mow with a brand new
blade and gallon of regular gasoline.

He lost, the numbers didn’t land as played -- Jesus starts
the old Chevy back to that line where glamour bumps into
squalor, where lawns are brown and cement angel statues
guard over wilted crab-grass.

Tomorrow, he prays, the work boots will stand on a posh rug
as the pull of a handle brings the dreams looked for -- though Jesus
has his doubts as his eyes close knowing another gallon is needed
to run that Briggs and Stratton.
