Home from the Sea*
a poem by NancyGene (2019)

My man is wed to his ship
Where he knows he’s home
There he rests, soothed, on
A bed of rocking wood and a
Ceiling of stars.

I see him, feel him with me
As weeks pass and moons grow
Large and small and disappear.
He touches the sea and
Lies with my sky.

He lands now, quiet, unsteady.
I look for storms but he
Smiles at me, asks of our babes.
We stare out at the sea and
Know he’s sailed again.

*Inspired by BPJ’s “Upon the Sea” and “Requiem” by Robert Louis Stevenson
