I installed a free trial to try it out and it has totally screwed up my
win 10 PC! (posting now from my backup PC) Links are broken, programs
won't run, start menu programs don't work, etc., Now I have to clean up
the mess. You have been warned!

Maybe it is easier to reinstall the OS.

I have run a registry cleaner and anti virus program to no avail. my
email client wont run so I have to try to recover the emails. I was just

This is such a crazy problem, I have no idea how to fix it. How can a
program not run when you completely uninstall and then reinstall it,
without getting any error messages? computer guru needed for this one!
Meanwhile I am transferring everything to my backup PC pending a
complete reinstall of windows and all programs onto the currently
corrupted PC.

The Win10 install is fucked. You need to start again from scratch
with a clean Win10 install first and then install the progs and data.

That's the way to go.

That is why I don't use such software at all.

Maybe you can change the handler of .exe like you can change the
handler for .txt. Maybe a "cleaner" broke something in the registry.

Maybe a "Restore point" every morning, and this may be automatic.

In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel, and then choose
it from the list of results

In the Control Panel search box, type recovery.

Select Recovery > Open System Restore.

In the Restore system files and setting box, select Next.

Select the restore point that you want to use in the list of results,
and then select Scan for affected programs.

Notes:

If you don’t see the restore point that you want to use, select the
Show more restore points check box to see more restore points.

If you’re not seeing any restore points, it might be because system
protection isn’t turned on. Here’s how to check:

In the search box on the taskbar, type control panel, and then choose
it from the list of results.

In the Control Panel search box, type recovery.

Select Recovery > Configure System Restore > Configure and see if the
Turn on system protection option is selected.

If the Turn on system protection option is not selected, system
protection isn’t turned on and there aren't any restore points. In
this scenario, you won't be able to recovery your PC using a system
restore point and will need to use one of the other recovery options
listed on this page.

If the Turn on system protection option is selected, continue with
step 6.

You'll see a list of items that will be deleted if you remove this
restore point. If you're OK with the deletions, select Close > Next >
Finish.

I have been using iobit.com software for years without any issues, and
it does keep the computer running well and free of junk. I guess the
lesson here if it works don't (try to) fix it!

Makes more sense to have a scheduled incremental backup
schedules to happen before you start using the system.

All that means is that it isnt totally fucked.

And that marco's suggestion that the association with .exe files
isnt what has got screwed.

Yes, but unless you can find wiith google someone who has
worked out what the AVG Tune Up fucks up, that's not likely.

Run 'Recovery'.... (settings, recovery..)

Re-installs win., Gives you options, re personal files. Takes some time
but pretty much failsafe.

The above will fix it and yes you can use the free version.

I've been playing around with OpenMediaVault. I wanted to run a headless
server, really an exercise in learning about these jiggers, and I've
also been looking at finding a use for my Mac Pro and all these *spare*
3.5" drives I have laying around. Settled on OMV 6.xx for the moment.

My Mac pro has these specs;
https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-eight-core-2.8-2008-specs.html

It has been upgraded from basic spec and currently has 3 x 500 GB
Samsung 3.5" HDDs (RAID 5 Config), 1 x 128 GB SSD (boot drive), an
Nvidia GTX8800 graphics card and 32 GB RAM. I did have 4 x 500 Gig
drives but one turned out, from SMART specs, to have a number of bad
sectors so I deleted it from the RAID. It's 2007 vintage so it's getting
up to its use by date. The boot drive is a 2.5" SSD mounted on a PCIe
card, one of these;

https://www.amazon.com.au/OWC-Accelsior-PCIe-Adapter-Drives/dp/B00WUZPMHE

That leaves me with 4 x 3.5" drive bays internally. The card is capable
of 6Gbs transfer rates but the SSD I have is only capable of half that
but still makes for a speedy bootup. Now I need to find a way to load it
up. Busiest I've seen it thus far is 10% CPU utilisation and that was on
bootup. Once it settles down it hovers between 1 and 3 percent
utilisation, RAM utilisation ditto. Never seen this beast run much more
than 15% CPU and RAM utilisation when used as a desktop so I doubt I'll
improve much, if at all, on that whilst throughput is limited by a
couple of Gigabit network cards

Might also try OMV on a spare mac mini I have here. It's an i5 with 16
GB RAM and a 500 GB HDD. That unit has a built in SD card slot so I can
boot OMV from that. Be an interesting comparison. ;-)

UPDATE: so I got the backup PC all setup as the main PC loaded with
everything I needed, then started work on the 'wreck'. so the plan was a
fresh install of Win10 Pro, after upgrade with a new CPU (Intel Core i7
3.40GHz to replace Intel Core i5 3.0 GHz ) and an SSD
https://tinyurl.com/Crucial-1Tb. However when removing/installing the
CPU, I somehow managed to damage the CPU socket
http://auslink.info/pics/socket.jpg ! dammed if I know how I did that!
so the mb is now cactus, so I replaced it with a Gigabyte GA H61M-D2-B3
https://tinyurl.com/GigaMb which I had new in a box, installed the new
CPU and hard drive, windoze, and some basic software, email, firefox,
etc., so what do think the boot time is now? would you believe from
pressing the start button until the desktop appears just 37 seconds!
(which includes the POST time of course) timed it with a stop watch
http://auslink.info/pics/37.jpg. I never knew windoze could boot so fast.

Shame it's still not as quick as my 486 laptop booting MSDOS
(including mouse+sound drivers, memory manager, and a
file-manager/program-launcher program). But then again if I really
cared, I could go down this path (provided I pick the right
motherboard):
