We seem to often have coalition governments these days - not all
Coalitions will to the right of centre or to the left of centre.
Wherever the government lies in that dimension, there will always be a
weakest link, and we are unlikely to all agree on who that is. I am
sure you can understand why some National Party supporters would have
preferred that it to have been possible to have had less than three
parties in the coalition. Who do you see as the strongest link in the
current coalition, and who the weakest, Tony?

New Zealand still has not totally got it. MMP is supposed to great a more
balanced reprenstation than FFP and as a Government much more like the
public.

Concentrate on the issues, not the person is a good start.

In terms of issues, ACT has probably achieved more of their objectives
than the other two parties, and without legislation being needed.

It was always clear that Peters was the greatest threat to the
political stability of the current Government. Those of us who have
been around since Peters first came to Parliament in 1979 will be well
aware of why.

We should remember that Luxon is now as experienced as Peters was in
1982. It is also worth remembering that everyone except National
ruled out Peters as a Coalition partner. Yes this includes ACT, and
in the current Government ACT and NZF are partners to National but not
each other.

If Luxon has not already sought advice from Dame Jenny Shipley and
potentially Helen Clark and Jim Bolger on how to get rid of Winston
should the occasion demand it, then he should.

Peters is behaving as if this is his last term in government, and that
is likely to be the case. There is no replacement leader in NZ1st so
he has been prepared to allow anyone to represent the party - we will
be better off without them. 1982 is a very long time ago, and I
suspect Peters was at that time already an effective politician -
albeit one that even then only appealed to a small section of voters.
Luxon may get part way there by the end of this term if the government
survives that long
