Dolby D on Freeview. Sometimes get slightly weird imaging from the
RAH, but mostly worth it for the immersion.

But if you are out of the UK it seems most bbc feeds are geoblocked due to
the Olympics, just in case they breach their agreement.

I'm still happy with stereo. But regret that their iPlayer TV 'best' format
now maxes at 192k aac for the audio. A couple of years ago it was 320k,
i.e. same rate as R3, albeit a different mix.

Are you confusing mp2 and AAC? Agreed you would need a minimum of 256K
and preferably 320K with mp2 to approach CD quality (the usual
reference) but given the stronger capabilities of AAC, 192K must at
least be the equivalent or probably better?

I don't think most general listeners know what a vpn is. Besides how would
you set one up to work with a smart speaker?

Normally whatever part of the world your Amazon account resides in is where
you do the stream look up, which is why unfortunately, no bbc streams now
will run in multiroom audio any more as they use the sounds skill to find
the stream address, Previously, it directly looked it up on the UK version
of Tune in, and that allowed the speaker group to parse to the skill and
back, but Sounds, and my tuner radio do not.
In my view to make a vpn work, you would need to first Open an account in
the foreign country, then use a VPn to pretend to be there in the first
place, but as this would need to change according to what you were listening
to, its a nightmare, and certainly not something Joe public would be aware
of or do easily.

OK, I don't know anything about smart speakers and the way they work.
I use a normal Internet connection and whatever app suits. Most of my
random listening to foreign stations uses Radio Garden. With this I
have access to the old home in the Faroes, and some interesting stuff
from Iceland and Norway.

Radio Garden is not an accessible app on smart phones, being graphic based
of course.
As we have said before, Tune in radio no longer are allowed to keep the
links to stations with no uk licence, and the bbc has pulled their links off
so everyone should go via bbc sounds.

No confusion on my part. For some years the highest resolution BBC 'TV'
files could be obtained with 320k *aac* audio. i.e. the same bitrate as
their best radio aac streams.

However that ended just over a year ago. Apparently it was a 'mistake' on
some-ones part. Just a happy one for users. When I asked I was told that it
confuses/stiffs some 'devices' so they decided it was a problem. i.e. audio
quality for the BBC's TV iplayer is now limited to a lower rate to suit
less capable 'devices'. (sigh)

FWIW some of the BBC people I asked about this also regretted the change,
but it was made by suits, not engineers.

ISTR a few years ago they used the proms for various experiments e.g.
FLAC, DASH?

The experimented with flac running in parallel with the aac. But decided
that it wasn't needed as the 320k aac was fine. My view was that I agreed
the difference was 'slight to indistinguishable' but it would have been
good to use flac for the sake of ensuring people could be confident that
they weren't losing anything at all.

They've continued to provide 320k aac for radio, but not for BBC TV from
the iPlayer. That now maxes at 192k aac. The slowest ships have set the
speed of the convoy! :-/

I suppose we'll have to accept what Auntie sends us but..

Great to see the National youth orchestra on BBC TV 4 last night well
worth the licence fee IMHO!...
