I appreciate badgolferman let us all know about this check-in feature.
It seems to be a standard geofence automated action (based on location).

I was thinking of setting it up for a very old relative, but it has one
problem which is that the person being watched has to initiate the action.

At least that's how I interpreted how the Apple checkin feature works.
Is that correct?

It doesn't work unless the person we care about initiates the process?

So, either way, the person we're caring about has to initiate something
a. Either when they leave place A to arrive at place B, or,
b. When they arrive at place B (using the traditional "I'm home" text.

Why should a healthy and reasonable person ever use such a crap?
Give a reason instead of bullshitting. Spy on the own kids?
It is antisocial to use such a service without people travelling with
this person informing about it.

Probably reasons why it is so incredibly popular, isn't it?

In what way?

Would it be "antisocial" to text one's parents where you are if you
don't tell the others in the group that you're doing so?

It's just something that you can forget to do.

People DO forget things, you know.

It's an Apple iOS feature.
And you are the *LAST* person in the world people take 'advice' from.

The notion is the negative case. If your loved one doesn't "check in"
because they never got to the destination, then you could call/text them
to see what's up....

I can see using it when my SO travels on business. She drives through a
few long stretches with nothing but rocks, lakes and Christmas trees.
Nice to know she arrives okay (she usually texts) so the absence of an
automated check-in would get me in gear.

A few years ago she had a car accident. Thankfully no injuries (other
than pride - she was looking to the side at something along the
highway). She called me. But could have been a case where she would not
be able to call me... I drove out to pick her up.

It's opt-in, not spyware. Useful for the case where the loved one does
not make it for some reason.

It's a new feature numbnutz.

Oh no! You've been caught saying stupid things. Again.
