The New York Post is reporting that the self-immolating zealot from St. Augustine whom authorities identified as Max Azzarello expired from his self-imposed injuries at 11:00 pm Friday night.

The late journalist and historian David Halberstam--who witnessed the globally-publicized self-immolation of Buddhist monk Thick Quang Duc* in Saigon on Monday, June 10, 1963**--later wrote these (or similar) words about the horrific experience: "I've only seen such a spectacle once in my life, but that's enough."

* Few folks other than those who've studied the Vietnam War in detail remember this: Duc made clear in his press release (which is what alerted Halberstam and other pressmen to position themselves at the Saigon intersection where Duc announced he would stage his suicidal stunt) that he was NOT protesting American involvement in Indochina; indeed, there was only a small U.S. military presence there in June 1963. Rather, his fiery self-destruction was in protest of the South Vietnamese regime's persecution of his sect's clerics, of which he was one.
** As it happened, that was one day before the Sunday when Johnny Depp was born, and two days prior to the assassination on Wednesday of Medgar Evers while on his north-suburban Jackson, Mississippi home's driveway.

The Wikipedia roster of politically-motivated self-immolations lists Duc's death as a day LATER than I commemorated it, to wit: on Tuesday, June 11, 1963...but that may be merely because the news of that mid-day, fiery suicide in Saigon reached everyone on the eastern side of the International Date Line while it was still Monday, June 10th here in the Western Hemisphere.

(Wiki editors also transliterate from Vietnamese the dead monk's name as Thich (rather than Thick, as some sources transliterate it).
