I have recently been thinking that the next step in social media is distributed - where no single corporation owns the network, and you own your own content, of course.

I did think NNTP would be a good platform, but it seems like there are no good NNTP clients, either for web or for devices. There is nothing as flash as facebook, and even the mobile clients and current desktop clients aren't as easy as I remember Outlook Express being for reading news back in the day.

Do you think it will happen? Are such things under development?

It's somewhat being done already with activitypub, mastodon, etc. They can be hard to implement, and sometimes they may try to play politics and end up being what they're trying to replace. But it's an existing idea, and a good one.

> I did think NNTP would be a good platform, but it seems like there are no good NNTP clients, either for web or for devices. One nice thing about nntp is that you could just run your own client on your own computer if you wish. If not, there are web based nntp clients that can be used.

> Do you think it will happen? Are such things under development?

It's already happening, you just posted using a nntp client sharing your message in a distributed network. The client may be boring, but it works. (I'm the developer, I'm allowed to say it's a boring client :)

trw has modified vichan to work nicely as a web based nntp client, and it's in active use. His sites are available in the i2p and tor networks, which gives even more ways to be part of the network.

I don't think either trw or myself are interested in creating something like facebook. I personally don't like the facebook/twitter way of showing posts. Does anybody even read 90% of the responses to a tweet? I prefer a forum format, so that's why my sites are created this way.

With rocksolid, you can simply find a nice nntp client (or write one) and join the network. The more nodes, the better.

Thanks for your comments, always nice to hear perspectives on what we're doing. Stick around, maybe a few more with shared interests will join in the conversation.

And I love your title :-). No really, I am flattered.

As for the question: there is one software developed by Retro Guy at the moment (the one you used to post), which enables anyone with basic IT knowledge to roll out a rocksolid node quickly (nntp server and web client displaying the contents).

There were some other attempts by me, using a modified version of fudforum, and also a hack for vichan (this is the site I post on now). Also a webclient written in bash. I pretty much dropped fudforum and my bashclient now, though, and will focus only on vichan and rslight in the future.

Also. there are some implementations of the rocksolid groups on other sites, like the one from Neodome.

At the moment I cannot dedicate much time to any development and am happy when the servers are just running. At some point, I want to do a hack for rslight that make it look like fudforum (already started, but there is a way to go yet).
The next big thing for rocksolid would be in my opinion to integrate the activitypub protocol, so we could exchange messages with the fediverse.

And Fediverse is anyway the future of social media, I believe, it is mainly some old farts and die hards that still use newsgroups (in absolute number still a lot, mind you, but compared to the big places next to nothing).

>There is nothing as flash as facebook,

If you like the facebook layout, it should be relatively easy to copy and paste.

>and even the mobile clients and current desktop clients aren't as easy as I remember Outlook Express being for reading news back in the day.

I think you should still be able to actually use Outlook or similar products (for rocksolid, I mean).

cheers

Sylpheed is a nice straightforward client. I haven't used it in some
time, but it's nice. I should try it with an rslight server (will do so
soon)

Using Claws-Mail to post right now and it's fine. (posting to an
rslight nntp server)

Just tried it and it works fine :)

Curious which is a fork of which? Which came first, Sylpheed or Claws-Mail? I suspect sylpheed is first but not sure.

Just found this:

Formerly Sylpheed-Claws.
It was originally a fork to showcase bleeding-edge features in Sylpheed, but become stable and popular. It essentially replaces Sylpheed.

Makes sense, but Sylpheed is still around and seems to work well. I like that Sylpheed doesn't take over the interface when updating like Claws Mail does. I also notice pgp options in Sylpheed that I don't see in Claws.

Claws Mail does seem a lot faster updating groups.

Everything I can find about how to get started with usenet is about file sharing or websites offering paid usenet hosting/access. I'm having trouble finding any of the popular public usenet servers everyone uses for text-only, I don't care about file sharing.

Does it matter which public server I use? do some servers have groups which other servers don't have? I assume this is the case. Looking at the url scheme of retrobbs, I assume that we only see a slice of the available usenet groups here (rocksolid.*).

>The next big thing for rocksolid would be in my opinion to integrate the activitypub protocol, so we could exchange messages with the fediverse.

This is what is so cool about decentralization and open standards. The other day I found out that you can follow a PeerTube channel directly with Mastodon.

>Does it matter which public server I use?

Yes, different servers offer different things. For most you will have to pay.

> do some servers have groups which other servers don't have? I assume this is the case.

Yes, most servers don't offer binary groups, because the legal risk is higher and much more storage space is needed.
Also the retention time might be very different between different servers.

> Looking at the url scheme of retrobbs, I assume that we only see a slice of the available usenet groups here (rocksolid.*).

retrobbs offers a wide range of groups, you can choose the subgroup at the top menu ("rocksolid" is one of them, "programming" would be another).
Also def3 (http://x5qrtsbiebrxj65t.onion/) offers access to other groups. Other nodes of the rocksolid network just offer the rocksolid groups (like def2).

I find the same thing looking online for usenet stuff. It's all file sharing, but of course there's a whole other usenet of actual communication.

I think most text usenet servers offer most of the same groups. There is eternal-september.org, aioe.org, neodome.net, i2pn2.org (mine) and others that offer pretty much all text groups to read/post for free. Rocksolid is a hierarchy (rocksolid.*), which I present on my sites. It's my main focus, and the hierarchy that trw and myself manage. I have the other groups for convenience. You can always request groups om my sites.

I've looked into activitypub, as has trw, and I'd like to get involved in some way, but it will take some time (I have a job lol).

I've been running sylpheed instead of claws-mail for about a week now. I like the way it updates and if it hits an error, doesn't just put up a window and never try again as claws-mail does. It's a nice client.

The only thing I notice that seems odd is how long it takes to bring up a message in a group after an update. Sometimes it takes close to a minute. It doesn't seem to matter what nntp server I'm connected to and I think it's loading from my local machine anyway at that point. But that part is very slow. I'm guessing it's just me (something not right on my end).

Sylpheed seems very slow when clicking on a group with new messages. It says 'Scanning folder' and can take a long time to load. This is with small groups. But then sometimes it's really fast. Not sure what's going on.
