I am no procmail user and do not know (yet) how to parse the mail with procmail
and *then* call from procmail a script to do the piping (if this would work). But
thanks for the suggestion.

You can use a procmail recipe to detect / match the messages that you
want to alter.

Then have procmail deliver the message into the program (script or what
have you) that does the modification that you want and subsequently
sending the message into the sendmail command (be it Sendmail proper or
something else that provides a sendmail like command. E.g.

Altering in that way that the hand rolled message from a Remailer send to
the Gateway looks like this:

From: mixmaster@domain.com
To: mail2bm@gateway.com
Subject: whatever

---Begin Bitmessage---
From: BM-address
To: BM-address
Subject: whatever

Hi Bob,

I am currently on vacation in Germany.

Love you
Alice
---End Bitmessage---

Now the messages gets altered by procmail and then will
be temporarly saved and after a couple of seconds picked
up via a oneliner and feed into the notbit client.

In order that this works the altered message looks like this:

From: BM-address
To: BM-address
Subject: whatever

Hi Bob,

I am currently on vacation in Germany.

Love you
Alice

I would like to avoid the temp saving step and would
much prefer direct piping from procmail into the BM client
but unfortunately I did not get this to work (yet).

Please also note this is *client* software and not server
software.

We can and should also discuss later more in detail how
the client works and stores messages etc.

Regards
Stefan

Meanwhile, if YAMN, Omnimix or QSL users have also Bitmessage
installed, please check or subscribe to the chan 'test'

I will later inject there more test and learning message, send from YAMN,

I think I would /not/ do the alteration with procmail. Instead I'd have
procmail deliver the message into another script (via the
"|/path/to/script" method) and rely on the script to alter the message
/and/ pass it on to the next step in the process (Bitmessage in this case).

> In order that this works the altered message looks like this:

It's not that you're /altering/ the message per se. Instead you're
extracting the /inner/ message that goes into Bitmessage from a separate
/outer/ message used as a transport.

This seems perfectly reasonable to me.

> I would like to avoid the temp saving step and would much prefer

This is why I think you want to pipe from procmail into a script and
have the script pipe into Bitmessage.

I threw together the following command line that I think conceptually
does what you want.

....$PROCMAIL_STUFF... sed -n '/^---Begin Bitmessage---$/,/^---End
Bitmessage---$/p' | sed '/ Bitmessage---$/d' ...$BITMESSAGE_STUFF...

I don't know the PROCMAIL_STUFF or the BITMESSAGE_STUFF off hand. I'll
leave that for you to figure out. The PROCMAIL_STUFF is your procmail
filter recipe to match things and deliver to /something/. Where that
/something/ is a (pair of) sed regular expressions. The
BITMESSAGE_STUFF is how you would take the output from sed and pipe it
into Bitmessage. (I suspect that you have 95% of both of these.)

I would likely put the sed and BITMESSAGE_STUFF in a script and have
procmail just deliver to that (wrapper) script.

There's probably a way to combine both regular expressions into one sed
invocation. But, my brain doesn't see it after returning from a five
mile hike. So I'll just stick with this proof of concept for now.
Hopefully it will give you ideas to chew on.

> Please also note this is *client* software and not server software.

Okay.

I'm not sure if, much less what, difference that makes. I don't know
enough about Bitmessage to speak about it in any way.

> We can and should also discuss later more in detail how the client

Okay. Feel free to reply to this thread, or start a new one, or email
me directly. I'm happy to share my thoughts. Hopefully they help.

I don't know if it speaks to the "stores messages" comment or not, but
the piping from procmail into a (wrapper) script (which calls sed &
Bitmessage) has the added advantage that nothing is actually stored on
disk. It's all a stream passing from program to program to program.

In the even that you do need to store something on disk, I'd suggest
storing it in a directory that's a mounted tmpfs file system (assuming
Linux) as that's pure memory, thus transient.

I have some other thoughts, but I don't know enough about Bitmessage to
speak to them. TL;DR: Public key encryption for the waiting files
which Bitmessage can decrypt when it's ready to use. (If Bitmessage can
do that.) }:-)
