I have "real" experience with EVs that goes back to the seventies -
in many ways they have not made a LOT of progress. Back in '78 my 4
passenger EV went 50 miles on a charge at 30MPH and 30 at 50 - and a
recharge took 8 hours and cost a quarter.
Controllers have gotten MUCH better - and so has battery life.
I "built" my own EV - a conversion - to my own design.

in Friday's newspaper .. in all-electric mode you can
expect to travel .. < insert fanfare here > ... 42 km.
that's 25 miles in the USA. Whoop-dee-doo.
I'm guessing that anyone who finds this "range" adequate
is someone who doesn't need or want a Cherokee -
and anyone buying this thing - _does_ need/want a Cherokee
but is buying this thing for feel-good reasons only.

I have watched Scotty Kilmer a few times. Billions
of word blasted at you as fast as he can talk and
very, very little information.

Coal Powered Rolling Firebombs are still a bad idea.

Natural Gas is a good idea (great range and fuel
is highly available) and Gasoline engines
are getting better all the time.

The Government needs to butt out and let the
market decide.

That is on purpose as the battery is not intended to be
the only power source, so it is much smaller.

Hybrids double the number of things to go wrong. They
are essentially a BEV with their own built in gasoline
powered generator.

Many people would find that adequate. Many days I travel from 2 to 10
miles. More people than you think are in that category and some like a
Cherokee.

When I was working, 90% of our employees could live with that range for
their commute. One guy has a Cherokee and lives about 5 miles away.

1) what kind of batteries at what voltage?

2) What motor at what voltage did you use?

3) did you use direct drive or a transmission?

4) was it hell on tires?

5) how did you charge it?

6) were you able to sell your design?

At least horses did not burn your house down. Crap all over
the place though. And no doors to lock you inside when
the batteries catch fire.

Hydrogen ICE (Internal Combustion Engines) and FC (Fuel Cell),
natural gas ICE and FC are all better then BEVs
(Battery Electric Vehicles), cost less, are less dangerous,
and POLLUTE A HELL OF A LOT LESS. And Gasoline ICE engines
are getting better all the time.

The market need to solve this. And I would
posit the market will come up with a variety
of different things for different purposes.
And there will still be BEVs for virtue signalers
to waste their money on.

The government needs to BUTT OUT!

That would have worked fine for me. 5 mile commute to work;
very occasional trips over 25 miles. We used our Highlander
and FJ Cruiser in just that way until retirement.

A son said he saw a guy with a bad burn on his leg from a cell phone.

People point out the dangers of gasoline and gas but they require oxygen
to burn where it is not required in a battery fire where all the energy
is self contained.

Quite - me too. 20-odd miles is fine for pottering around town, with the
occasional overnight charge at home.

Also, an ICE has barely warmed up after 5 miles - hugely polluting and
inefficient.

Ummmm? It's a HYBRID. That means it can go hundreds of miles if you need
it to. And it can use no gas at all for a trip to the grocery store.
